Volkhov sub, armed with Kalibr missiles, back in Vladivostok after mission - Russian Pacific Fleet (Part 2)

MOSCOW. Aug 23 (Interfax) - The Volkhov submarine, which returned to base from a mission, has been welcomed at a ceremony in Vladivostok, the Pacific Fleet's press service said on Friday.

"A solemn ceremony of welcoming the Volkhov submarine of the Pacific Fleet's submarine formation, which returned to base from a combat mission at sea, took place in Vladivostok" the press service said.

"The combat mission lasted for 44 days," it said.

Pacific Fleet Commander Viktor Liina congratulated the submarine's crew on completing the combat mission and presented medals and diplomas to crewmembers who distinguished themselves, it said.

A Pacific Fleet unit also returned to Vladivostok from a long-range voyage, the press service said.

"Over seven months of the long-range voyage, the Marshal Shaposhnikov frigate covered 32,000 nautical miles, while the fleet's flagship, the Varyag missile cruiser covered 28,000 nautical miles," it said.

As reported, the Pacific Fleet unit began the long-range voyage on January 22. The ships called at ports of India, Sri Lanka, Iran, Qatar and Eritrea and held dozens of combat and daily routine drills.

The unit completed every combat assignment in the Mediterranean Sea and held a series of exercises together with ships from other Russian fleets and ship-borne anti-submarine aircraft.

The unit crossed eight seas and two oceans twice, it said.
