MOSCOW. Aug 23 (Interfax) - The employee of a Volgograd penitentiary where hostages were taken earlier on Friday has died in hospital, Russia's Federal Penitentiary Service (FSIN) said.
"Sadly, the employee who was taken hostage and hospitalized has died," the FSIN press service said.
Four convicts at the Volgograd penal colony No. 19 took eight staff and four inmates hostage earlier on Friday.
Four employees are dead and some are injured, they were hospitalized. Four inmates have been injured.
The hostage-takers were all neutralized, the National Guard said.
Russia's Investigative Committee has launched an inquiry on charges of hostage taking and destabilizing the work of a correctional institution.
