IAEA chief arrives in Russia's Kurchatov to visit Kursk NPP (Part 2)

KURCHATOV (Kursk region). Aug 27 (Interfax) - International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Grossi has arrived in Kurchatov to evaluate the situation at the Kursk Nuclear Power Plant (NPP), an Interfax correspondent reported on Tuesday.

The Russian delegation to the meeting includes Kurchatov Mayor Igor Korpunkov and Kursk NPP director Alexander Uvakin.

As previously reported, Grossi would discuss the problem of strikes with the Kursk NPP's management and would analyze steps to ensure the facility's nuclear safety and security. He also plans to assess the facility's external power supply.

After visiting the Kursk NPP, Grossi will go to Kiev, where he expects to hold talks with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky.

In an interview with Bloomberg TV, Grossi said that, if the IAEA obtained incontrovertible evidence enabling it to identify the source of strikes upon the NPP area, the agency would name it.

In a phone call on August 17, CEO of Russia's Rosatom atomic energy agency Alexei Likhachev urged Grossi to visit the Kursk NPP and the town of Kurchatov where the plant's personnel live as soon as possible to personally examine the situation surrounding the plant, where, as he said, a Ukrainian drone attack caused a blast near an outdoor switchyard the day before.

Likhachev has said on numerous occasions that Kiev's actions pose a direct threat to the Kursk and Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plants and undermine the IAEA's principles of nuclear safety and security and physical integrity formulated by the IAEA director general in 2022.
