Russian Security Council secretary expresses serious concern over radicals' attempts to push out traditional Islam, secular laws

NALCHIK. Aug 27 (Interfax) - Attempts to displace secular laws and traditional Islam with radical ideology are of particular concern, Russian Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu said.

"Attempts to introduce into public consciousness the possibility of applying Sharia law instead of secular laws, displacing traditional Islam with its radical currents, and forming new Salafi groups are of particular concern," Shoigu said at a visiting meeting in the North Caucasus Federal District.

There are still differences within the religious communities of the North Caucasus Federal District due to the destructive influence of foreign radical preachers and personal ambitions of individual leaders of official religious organizations sometimes, he said.

Attempts by Western countries to provoke disintegration processes in the North Caucasus using immigrant and nationalist movements, as well as the gang ringleaders hiding abroad, should be paid the closest attention, Shoigu said.

"To effectively counter these negative trends and manifestations, comprehensive preventive measures are needed to ensure the timely detection and thwarting of threats of extremism and terrorism, prevent the spread of radical ideas, and avert conflict situations in interethnic and inter-confessional relations," he added.
