Russian fighter jets, bombers drill air strikes on mock enemy ships in Baltic Sea

MOSCOW. Aug 28 (Interfax) - Sukhoi Su-30SM2 fighter jets and Su-24 bombers have drilled strikes on surface targets during training missions over the Baltic Sea, the Baltic Fleet's press service said in a statement on Wednesday.

"Pilots flew to the designated areas of the sea to uncover the surface situation and detect mock enemy ships, as well as launched training attacks on them," the statement said.

The exercise involved more than 10 aircraft of the fleet's naval aviation unit, it said.

The aircraft flew to a ground-based aviation range in the Kaliningrad region after accomplishing training and combat missions over the sea, it said. The aircraft drilled targeted bombing against targets simulating mock enemy command posts, fortifications, troops and military hardware, it said. The strikes were delivered with OFAB-250 and OFAB-270 bombs, as well as unguided air missiles, it said.

According to official information, Su-30SM2 fighter jets are an upgraded version of the aircraft in service with the Russian Aerospace Forces and Navy. The upgrades increased the range of detecting and identifying air targets. The fighter jets are armed with new high-precision weapons for hitting air, ground and sea targets at a range of several hundred kilometers.
