BRUSSELS. Aug 28 (Interfax) - NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said on Wednesday that military support to Ukraine should continue and pledged that the allies are committed to stepping up their military aid to Kiev.
"Allies today reaffirmed they are stepping up their military aid to Ukraine. We must continue to provide Ukraine with the equipment and munitions it needs," Stoltenberg was quoted as saying in a statement published on the NATO website.
Stoltenberg made this statement at a meeting of the NATO-Ukraine Council, which was held at Kiev's request. The council meeting was attended by Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov, who joined the meeting via video link.
Stoltenberg also said that the allies had vowed at the NATO summit in July to supply Ukraine with additional air defense systems, including batteries of Patriot air defense missile systems. They also agreed that they would provide at least 40 billion euros in security assistance to Kiev in 2025.
