CHISINAU. Sept 6 (Interfax) - Incumbent Moldovan President Maia Sandu is the second aspirant to have collected the required number of voters' signatures to run in the October 20 presidential election.
Sandu submitted the signatures of 25,000 voters to the Central Elections Commission (CEC) on Friday for registration as a presidential candidate.
By law, the CEC will verify the signatures and decide whether to register Sandu as a presidential candidate or not within seven days.
Alexandr Stoianoglo is the only person registered as a presidential candidate (independent) so far. Another 11 campaigns are collecting signatures to register their candidates: former parliament member Octavian Ticu, former Foreign Minister Tudor Ulianovschi, Party of Development and Consolidation of Moldova chairman Ion Chicu, Our Party chairman Renato Usatii, former head of Gagauzia Irina Vlah, Coalition for Unity and Welfare leader Igor Munteanu, former prosecutor Victoria Furtuna, journalist Natalia Morari, former DA Platform chairman Andrei Nastase, lawyer Alexandru Arseni, and former Prime Minister Vasile Tarlev.
From 15,000 to 25,000 voters' signatures must be submitted to the CEC before September for registration as a presidential candidate.
