BAKU. Sept 18 (Interfax) - Armenia should formalize the renouncement of its claims against Karabakh in the constitution, Azerbaijani presidential aide and head of the presidential administration's foreign policy department Hikmet Hajiyev told the press on Wednesday.
"The Armenian constitution should be amended through a referendum in order to sign the peace agreement. The Armenian people should drop its utopian aspirations to have Karabakh joined to Armenia and formalize its wish for peaceful co-existence with Azerbaijan in the constitution," Hajiyev said.
The negotiations can be accelerated after this, he said. "Armenia sent the latest comments on the peace agreement's text to Azerbaijan a short time ago, more than 70 days after receiving it [from Baku]. This is a very long period," he said.
Certain agreements have been reached on most articles of the peace agreement, but there is still a lot of work to be done, Hajiyev said. "First of all, this concerns Armenian constitution. It must formalize the renouncement of territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Territorial claims against our country are a matter of our concern," Hajiyev said.
