EU planning to provide 35-bln-euro loan to Ukraine - von der Leyen

BRUSSELS. Sept 20 (Interfax) - The European Union will give a 35-billion-euro loan to Ukraine, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said on Friday.

"The European Commission will provide a loan of up to 35 billion euros to Ukraine as part of the G7 pledge. This is another major EU contribution to Ukraine's recovery," von der Leyen posted on X, while visiting Kiev.

The G7 leaders agreed at a summit in Italy in June to provide a $50-billion loan to Ukraine and divided the funds between project members in accordance with the size of their economies. Thus, the EU and the United States were due to provide $20 billion each, with the rest contributed by Canada, Japan and the UK. However, after a series of difficulties, the EU came to a compromise of 35 billion euros.

EU member states and the European Parliament are due to approve the loan by the end of this year.

Bloomberg said in mid-September, citing its sources, the EU was considering proposals on the extension of sanctions immobilizing Russian assets for three to five years as a guarantee for the $50-billion loan to Ukraine.
