Russian deputy FM, UN senior coordinator discuss situation in Palestinian-Israeli conflict zone

MOSCOW. Sept 23 (Interfax) - Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Vershinin and UN Senior Humanitarian and Reconstruction Coordinator for Gaza Sigrid Kaag had discussed the situation in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict zone, the Russian mission to the UN said on its website on Sunday.

"The interlocutors exchanged views on the current situation in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict zone amid the ongoing Israeli operation in the [Gaza] Strip. They also discussed the efforts of Kaag and her team towards the provision of comprehensive humanitarian assistance to the needy and affected Palestinians under respective UN Security Council Resolution 2720," the mission said.

Both sides "reaffirmed the need for the soonest ceasefire, release of all forcibly held persons, provision of full humanitarian assistance, and reinstatement of the peace process on the universally recognized international legal basis," it said.

The meeting took place at the UN New York Headquarters on September 22, the mission said.
