WASHINGTON. Sept 26 (Interfax) - The United States is not planning to make any announcement about lifting the restrictions on Kiev using long-range weapons for striking Russia, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said on Thursday.
When asked by a journalist if the U.S. could change its policy on the issue, Jean-Pierre said that she expected no announcements.
U.S. President Joe Biden is expected to discuss the issue with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky later on Thursday, she said.
On Monday, Biden said that he had yet to decide whether to lift such restrictions on Ukraine.
Last Friday, the British radio station LBC, citing sources, reported that the Biden administration feared that a change in policy on Ukraine's use of long-range weapons could harm the election campaign of Vice President Kamala Harris.
Eventually, the United States and Britain may approve Kiev's use of long-range weapons for strikes on Russia, but will do so "in private" and will not officially announce the decision until "after the first missiles have been fired," LBC said.
Biden said previously that the issue of lifting the restrictions on Ukraine using long-range weapons was being worked on. In an interview with Sky News, U.S. State Secretary Antony Blinken did not rule out that the U.S. president could allow Ukraine to carry out missile strikes deep inside Russia.
The Kremlin thinks the U.S. has already made a decision to lift the restrictions on the use of ATACMS (Army Tactical Missile System) missiles for strikes on Russia from Ukraine, Russian presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov said.
He promised a corresponding response to Washington's possible permission for Ukraine to strike Russian territory with long-range weapons.
