MINSK. Sept 27 (Interfax) - Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has pledged to further pardon inmates, which is a task of the head of state.
"Yes, I will keep doing it. Because it's my job, a constitutional duty of the president to pardon a person. Because I need to fulfill my duties," the Belarusian state-run news agency BelTA quoted Lukashenko as telling students of the Belarusian State University of Informatics and Radioelectronics.
He also said he believed in the sincere repentance of the convicted extremists he pardoned, although some of them might change their minds after release.
"Of course, there will be those who promised, repented and said they would adjust their attitude and stop interfering with other people's lives. [...] They break their promises sometimes," Lukashenko said.
The pardoning of people who took part in protests after the Belarusian presidential election in 2020 was announced twice in September.
