MOSCOW. Oct 1 (Interfax) - It would be unwise to insist on talks on a new strategic arms treaty while pretending that the global reality has not changed, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.
"We should take a sober look at the situation which has taken shape, take every new aspect into consideration, and build the negotiating process accordingly. We believe it would be unwise, to say the least, to insist on such negotiations, while pretending that nothing has happened," Peskov told journalists on Tuesday, commenting on media reports which said Russia would not agree to sign a new strategic arms treaty to replace the current document.
"Although this is anonymized information, the source, but in general its meaning coincides with the statement made by our head of state earlier this year. He said that, of course, it would be practically impossible to discuss strategic arms, arsenals, without taking into account the nuclear military infrastructure in Europe, drawing European states into the negotiating process, and disregarding other elements of strategic security. Russia is not going to do that," Peskov said.
