Russian jet fighters, bombers conduct exercise in Baltic region

MOSCOW. Oct 15 (Interfax) - Russia's military aviation is holding practice flights over mainland Kaliningrad region and waters of the Baltic Sea, the Baltic Fleet's press service said in a statement on Tuesday.

"During the flights, the crews of [Sukhoi] Su-30SM, Su-30SM2, Su-27 and Su-24M aircraft are acting out tactical episodes in practicing core tasks, including fire support for land units, destruction of mock enemy command posts, armored hardware, troops and surface ships, and aerial reconnaissance," the statement said.

At the first stage of the exercise, the bombers, supported by a flight of Su-27 fighter aircraft, flew into the assigned square of the Baltic Sea and practiced nominal strikes with targets imitating a squadron of mock enemy ships. The role of these was played by Baltic Fleet ships.

"The crews of Su-24M frontline bombers carried our nominal strikes to destroy group ground targets imitating columns of mock enemy armored and automotive vehicles at a special training range in the Kaliningrad region," the statement said.

The fighters and bombers flew more than 20 sorties during daytime and at night, it said.

"The Russian aircraft flights over the Baltic Sea were performed strictly in accordance with the international rules of airspace," the statement said.
