Russian Baltic Fleet's Velikiye Luki diesel sub undergoing trials with ships, naval aircraft

MOSCOW. Oct 24 (Interfax) - The crews of the Mozhaisk submarine, the Zelenodolsk small antisubmarine ship, a number of rescue vessels, and naval aircraft of Russia's Baltic Fleet are engaged in the builders trials of the Velikiye Luki, a Project 677-class diesel-electric submarine, in the Baltic Sea, the fleet said in a statement on Thursday.

The crew tested the operations of all of the new submarine's systems and mechanismsand its performance, the fleet said. They also "practiced damage control actions and the use of torpedoes and mines," the statement said.

The trials are designed to test the submarine's surface and submerged speed properties and maneuverability, as well as its navigation, communication, sonar, and mast-hoisting equipment, it said.
