Kremlin calls Belarusian presidential election internal affair, voices Russia's support for candidate Lukashenko

MOSCOW. Oct 25 (Interfax) - The Belarusian presidential election is an internal affair, yet everyone in Russia will support the reelection of incumbent Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.

"As for the candidacy of Alexander Grigoryevich Lukashenko, you know how much President Putin and many people in Russia value his role in the development of Belarus as a sovereign state. [...] Of course, we will be monitoring progress of the election campaign, and I am sure that everyone in Russia will support precisely the candidacy of Alexander Grigoryevich," Peskov told reporters on Friday.

He thus answered a question about the Belarusian presidential election and Lukashenko's decision to run for reelection.

"Anyway, this is an absolutely sovereign right of Belarus, and the choice to be made by the Belarusian people is the main thing," Peskov said.
