Putin: Russia trying to avert major war in Mideast

MOSCOW. Nov 5 (Interfax) - Russia is making active efforts to prevent the Palestinian-Israeli conflict from growing into a major war, Russian President Vladimir Putin said.

"As the Israeli ambassador is present here, I'll say that Russia is making active efforts to prevent the current escalation of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict from growing into a major war in the Middle East," Russian President Vladimir Putin said at a ceremony of accepting credentials from newly-appointed ambassadors.

"We are convinced that the parties can be returned onto a reconciliation track and a durable and lasting settlement can be achieved only on a commonly acceptable international legal basis. And a key precondition for reestablishing peace in the region is the implementation of a two-state formula approved by the United Nations Security Council and General Assembly resolution," he said.
