Moscow protests Chisinau's actions with regard to Russian election monitors

MOSCOW. Nov 6 (Interfax) - The Russian Foreign Ministry summoned Moldovan Ambassador Lilian Darii on Wednesday to present him with a protest over Chisinau's actions with regard to Russian members of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) mission monitoring the recent presidential election, the ministry said.

"The ambassador was presented with a strong protest over Chisinau's unfriendly discriminatory actions with regard to Russian short-term observers from the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (OSCE/ODIHR) observation mission in the presidential elections in Moldova," the ministry said in a statement on Wednesday.

"Before the first round of the voting and the constitutional referendum on joining the EU, which were held on October 20, Moldovan authorities unwarrantedly denied accreditation to five international observers from Russia," it said.

"Before the second round, which took place on November 3, three Russian members of the OSCE/ODIHR mission were denied entry to Moldova at the Chisinau airport, despite having the Moldovan Central Electoral Commission's accreditation," it said.

"Such actions constitute a blatant violation by Chisinau of its international obligations, particularly the 1990 CSCE/OSCE Copenhagen Document and the 2002 CIS Convention on Standards of Democratic Elections, Electoral Rights and Freedoms, to which the Republic of Moldova is a signatory," it said.

"An identical representation over the Moldovan authorities' glaring actions with regard to international observers from Russia has been made to the OSCE/ODIHR leadership through Russia's permanent mission to the OSCE in Vienna," the ministry said.
