Court upholds sentence handed down to U.S. and Russian citizen Karelina for high treason

YEKATERINBURG. Nov 11 (Interfax) - An appellate court has considered materials of the case involving Ksenia Karelina, a citizen of the United States and Russia, who was charged with high treason, the press service for the Sverdlovsky region's court said.

"Having considered the appeal, the Second Court of Appeals of the general jurisdiction found the judicial act to be lawful and founded. The appeal filed by the defense lawyer was declined. The sentence has thus taken legal force," the court said.

According to earlier reports, the Sverdlovsky region's court found Ksenia Karelina guilty of high treason and sentenced her to 12 years in a general-security colony. She was also fined 300,000 rubles and sentenced to subsequent restriction of freedom for 1.5 years. Her defense lawyer appealed that decision.

According to the investigators, Karelina transferred money to a Ukrainian organization, which was later used to buy military property for the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
