Former Russian Defense Ministry official given suspended sentence on corruption counts

MOSCOW. Nov 13 (Interfax) - A court in Moscow has given a suspended sentence to former division head at a Russian Defense Ministry department Yevgeny Makeyev for taking a 1.8-million-ruble bribe, the Russian Investigative Committee said.

"The court found evidence collected by the Russian Investigative Committee sufficient for sentencing former division head at the Russian Defense Ministry's Department on the Provision of State Defense Orders Yevgeny Makeyev," the committee said on Telegram on Wednesday.

According to the committee, Makeyev "was found guilty of taking a large bribe in the course of fulfillment of a state defense order."

"Investigators and the court found that the Russian Defense Ministry and Cheboksary Metallist Plant Director Sergei Chervyakov signed a multimillion R&D contract in 2019 as part of a state defense order," the committee said.

"In 2020, Verteletsky and his subordinate Yevgeny Makeyev accepted over 1.8 million rubles in bribes from Chervyakov in exchange for accepting work of inadequate quality. Verteletsky's criminal deeds caused the state damage exceeding 73 million rubles," it said.

"The court gave Makeyev, who took a plea deal, a suspended sentence of four years with a four-year probation and a fine of over 2.6 million rubles," the committee said.

"Verteletsky is still familiarizing himself with the case materials. The Chervyakov case was isolated into a special procedure and, once the case materials are studied, will be submitted for the approval of a bill of indictment and directed to a court," it said.
