EU ceases financial support for Georgian govt - Borrell

BRUSSELS. Nov 19 (Interfax) - The European Union has ceased its financial support for the Georgian government, High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and European Commission Vice President Josep Borrell said.

"We have cancelled receiving support from the European Peace Facility to the Georgian Armed Forces. We have cancelled 120 million euros of support to the Georgian government [...] They will be allocated to programs benefiting the civil society and Georgian people directly," Borrell said at a press conference following a meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council in Brussels on Monday evening.

The EU will send a "political mission" to Georgia "to study carefully what happened" during the parliamentary elections on October 26, he said.

"And to the Georgian people I want to repeat what I said last year during my visit to Georgia. The door of the European Union will remain open for Georgia. But the course of the government of Georgia when it comes to the respect of the rule of law and basic principles [...] is turning Georgia away from its European Union integration path," he said.
