SUKHUM. Nov 20 (Interfax) - A presidential election in Abkhazia may be scheduled for the middle of February 2025, a source in the Abkhaz Central Elections Commission (CEC) told Interfax.
"Under our legislation, a presidential election is called by the country's president. If the powers of the president end early, the parliament calls an early presidential election no later than 15 days from the day of such termination of powers," the source said.
"The law states that an election needs to be conducted within three months from the day the president's resignation is accepted. The People's Assembly considered Aslan Bzhania's resignation and adopted a resolution on his resignation on November 19, therefore, an early election can be held before February 19," the Abkhaz Central Elections Commission said.
Abkhaz Parliament Chairman Lasha Ashuba said at a parliament session on November 19 the People's Assembly would set the date of the early presidential election after consultations with the CEC.
