Moldova, UK sign defense partnership agreement

CHISINAU. Nov 20 (Interfax) - Moldova and the United Kingdom concluded a security and defense partnership agreement on Wednesday, and the document was signed Moldovan Foreign Minister Mihai Popsoi and UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy in Chisinau.

The parties also signed an agreement on the readmission of individuals illegally staying in the two countries. The documents were signed following a trilateral meeting, which was also attended by Romanian Foreign Minister Luminita Odobescu.

The parties focused on security in the region at the trilateral meeting, Popsoi said.

Lammy said that Moldova's freedom and its future are crucial for the UK, which is why it supports its democracy.

He said that London would allocate an additional 5 million pounds to Chisinau for its healthcare system, including the support for Ukrainian refugees.

The UK will also allocate more funds to counter threats, including for cyber security, Lammy said.

For her part, Odobescu said that Moldova would not face all these threats alone, as there are partners, such as Romania and the UK.

As reported, Moldova signed an agreement on security and defense partnership with the European Union on May 21, 2024.
