Georgia to get functioning parliament, govt next week - acting speaker

TBILISI. Nov 22 (Interfax) - The 11th Georgian Parliament will hold its first meeting next Monday, on November 25, acting parliament speaker Shalva Papuashvili said, as he announced next week's parliament agenda.

"President Salome Zourabichvili has not scheduled a parliament meeting to acknowledge its powers, yet the constitution says that the first meeting shall take place within ten days since the Central Elections Commission announces parliamentary election results. We honor the constitution and will hold the first meeting on November 25," Papuashvili said at a press briefing on Friday.

Parliament committees will be set up and their chairs will be elected at the meeting, he said. The ruling party has nominated Papuashvili for parliament speaker, who will also be elected at the meeting.

"Irakli Kobakhidze will be confirmed as the prime minister in parliament next week and will present new government members. So, our government will be confirmed as early as by the end of the week," Papuashvili said.

At the same time, 61 representatives of four opposition parties elected among 150 parliament members have refused to accept their parliament seats, alleging that the ruling party had rigged parliamentary elections and demanding that new elections be scheduled.

The opposition said it would stage a mass protest near the parliament on November 25 and threatened to thwart the first parliament meeting.
