Kazakh FM says necessary to revive 'spirit of Helsinki'

ASTANA. Dec 6 (Interfax) - Principles of the Helsinki Final Act of 1975 must be strictly complied with, Kazakh Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign Minister Murat Nurtleu said at a meeting of the OSCE Ministerial Council in Malta, as reported by the Kazakh Foreign Ministry's press service on Friday.

"While addressing the meeting participants, Nurtleu noted the need for reviving 'the spirit of Helsinki' and underlined the importance of preserving the OSCE as a unique platform for the inclusive dialogue on security issues," the press service said.

He said Kazakhstan was committed to multilateral efforts towards the provision of peace and stability in the OSCE area and was ready for further participation in the OSCE strengthening and mitigation of the challenges facing it.

Nurtleu urged colleagues to adapt the OSCE to the emerging new security architecture.

He said it was important to develop economic and environmental cooperation in the OSCE in the context of results of the One Water Summit co-chaired by Kazakhstan, France and Saudi Arabia in Riyadh on December 3.

Nurtleu called for pooling efforts to deal with climate change and invited OSCE members to the UN Regional Climate Summit due in Kazakhstan in 2026.

The meeting participants were briefed on the OSCE activity under the Maltese presidency in 2024 and discussed the countering of challenges and security threats in the OSCE area and ways to overcome the OSCE institutional crisis, which developed against the backdrop of the complex geopolitical situation, the ministry press service said. The main result of the OSCE Ministerial Council meeting was the confirmation of the OSCE secretary general and heads of key OSCE institutions.
