Any attempts to cancel Georgian election results doomed to fail - parliament speaker

TBILISI. Dec 6 (Interfax) - The ongoing protests in Tbilisi make no sense and have the sole purpose of cancelling results of the Georgian parliamentary elections, Georgian parliament speaker Shalva Papuashvili said.

"The loud statements of the alleged policy change by the authorities are nothing but a smoke screen for the actual lustration of the elections lost by the opposition forces and confidently won by our party, Georgian Dream," Papuashvili said at a press briefing on Friday.

Any attempts to cancel the election results are doomed to fail, Papuashvili said. "The majority of our population has chosen peace, stability, a European future and development of this country, and we will protect their choice," he said.

The fact that European politicians keep silent about violence of the Tbilisi protesters proves they encourage such violence in order to bring opposition forces they control to power in Georgia, Papuashvili said. "Shame on European politicians," he said.
