Georgian parliament speaker urges protesters to obey law

TBILISI. Dec 9 (Interfax) - Georgian parliament speaker Shalva Papuashvili has urged Tbilisi protesters to stop violence.

"Processes must return to the parliament, television studios or even streets but in a proper form, which will not cause unrest," Papuashvili said at a press briefing on Monday, addressing the protesters.

The main duty of the state at this point is to provide law and order and to prevent an uncontrollable turn of events, Papuashvili said. "There will be no compromises in this area," he said.

The root cause of the protests is disappointment and unwillingness to recognize the defeat in parliamentary elections, Papuashvili said. "Elections are the only way to determine a political result, which must be accepted by everyone, including those abroad, as this is a principle of democracy," Papuashvili said.

The parliament will keep working, the autumn session will be concluded at the end of this week, and the electoral college president will be elected on Saturday, he said.
