Russian Investigative Committee's central office to investigate terror attack that killed Lieut. Gen. Kirillov (Part 2)

MOSCOW. Dec 17 (Interfax) - The central office of the Russian Investigative Committee will be investigating the terror attack in Moscow, which killed Russian Radiation, Chemical and Biological Protection Forces Commander Igor Kirillov, Russian Investigative Committee spokesperson Svetlana Petrenko said.

"The criminal case into the death of Russian Radiation, Chemical and Biological Protection Forces Commander Igor Kirillov and his assistant has been directed to the Main Investigative Department of the Russian Investigative Committee for an effective and comprehensive investigation," Petrenko told the press.

This is an order from Russian Investigative Committee head Alexander Bastrykin "given, in particular, because of the complexity of the crime and the need for conducting specialized examinations at federal expert institutions," she said.

The criminal case was opened on counts of murder, terror attack, and illegal possession and production of explosives, Petrenko said.

An investigative team is at work together with employees of the Russian Investigative Committee's Main Forensics Department, she said.

"Essential evidence, including explosive device fragments, were found at the crime scene and seized. This and other material evidence will undergo examinations," Petrenko said.

"Witnesses are being interviewed, and other investigative procedures are being carried out," she said.

An explosion near a residential building on Moscow's Ryazansky Avenue killed two men on Tuesday morning.

Petrenko identified the victims as Russian Radiation, Chemical and Biological Protection Forces Commander Igor Kirillov and his assistant.

She said unknown persons set off an explosive device planted in a scooter parked near a house entrance.
