Russian helicopters practice finding and destroying mock enemy submarine in Baltic Sea

MOSCOW. Jan 21 (Interfax) - The Baltic Fleet's Kamov Ka-27 and Ka-27M ship-based anti-submarine helicopters have destroyed a mock enemy submarine during an exercise, the fleet's press service said in a statement on Tuesday.

"While performing flight shifts, the helicopters practiced tactical techniques of finding and identifying submarines, and tracking them with radars and sonars. On completing target-pursuit tasks the Ka-27 and Ka-27M helicopters practiced simulated deployment of antisubmarine weapons," the statement said.

The sorties were performed along a set itinerary over the waters of a training range of the Fleet. They involved up to ten units of aviation hardware, it said.

The fleet's ship formations led by their commanders started practicing their core missions in the sea, it said.

"The practice involves all of Baltic Fleet ships, namely, the crews of corvettes, small missile ships and motorboats, small antisubmarine ships and trawlers, patrol boats - in all, more than 30 ships and supply vessels," the statement said.

By now, almost 100% of the crews have successfully completed the practice with elements of combat and everyday organization while anchored at the base, it said. Some of the crews proceeded to practice elements of core missions in the sea.

"The winter training period also will involve Baltic Sea outings with a series of live fire exercises involving sea, air and coastal targets," it said.
