British national to face trial in Russia for mercenarism, terrorism - Investigative Committee

MOSCOW. Jan 30 (Interfax) - British citizen James Anderson, charged with committing crimes while fighting alongside Ukrainian forces in the Kursk region, will go on trial at a Russian military court, the Russian Investigative Committee said.

"The Russian Investigative Committee completed its criminal investigation against national of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland James Scott Rhys Anderson, charged with committing a terrorist act and acting as a mercenary," the committee said in a statement on its Telegram channel on Thursday.

According to investigators, "Anderson directly participated in the armed conflict on the Russian territory as a mercenary in exchange for a financial reward."

"James Anderson, armed with automatic small arms and explosives, illegally crossed the state border of the Russian Federation and intruded into the Kursk region in mid-November 2024. He committed crimes against civilians for the purpose of intimidating the population, also causing serious material damage and destabilizing local authorities' work," the statement said.

A court ordered that Anderson, who was detained in the Kursk region, "be remanded in custody as a restraining measure," it said.

"The criminal case and the indictment were forwarded to the 2nd Western District Military Court for consideration on its merits," it said.
