Russian Pacific Fleet ships hold air defense exercise in East China Sea

MOSCOW. Feb 7 (Interfax) - A unit of the Russian Pacific Fleet's Rezky and Aldar Tsydenzhapov corvettes and the Pechenga mid-sized sea tanker is continuing to fulfill the tasks of its mission in the Asia-Pacific region as planned, the Russian Defense Ministry said.

"The ships held an air defense exercise in the East China Sea, during which their personnel detected mock airborne targets and destroyed them at a safe distance from the unit by firing anti-aircraft artillery weapons," the ministry said in a statement.

While crossing the East China Sea, the Russian ships were followed by foreign states' ships and aircraft, the statement said.

"The squadron of the Pacific Fleet ships is fulfilling its missions in the Asia-Pacific region in accordance with the approved plan for their long-range deployment. During upcoming events, the unit will hold a series of exercises in the Asia-Pacific region, including drills to practice searching for and destroying mock enemy submarines," the ministry said.
