Former Russian Defense Ministry rep arrested on counts of Rostov Ball-Bearing Plant fraud

ROSTOV-ON-DON. Feb 10 (Interfax) - Former head of the Russian Defense Ministry's military representative office is suspected of embezzlement in fulfilling a state defense order by ball-bearing plants, including GPZ 10 in Rostov-on-Don, the press service for Rostov regional branch of the Federal Security Service (FSB) said in a statement.

"The involvement of the former head of the Russian Defense Ministry's military representative office in embezzlement while fulfilling a state defense order by ball-bearing plants, including GPZ 10 in Rostov-on-Don has been documented. Detectives found that the suspect overstated prices for ball bearings made for government clients manifold," the press service said.

Criminal cases were opened on counts of fraud and bribery.

The suspect was placed under arrest.

As reported, the police searched three ball-bearing plants in December 2024, including GPZ 10 in Rostov-on-Don, OK-Loza in Sergiyev Posad, and GPZ 2 in Tver, as part of a criminal case of fraud in the fulfilling a state defense order. Investigators also searched military representative offices and a service provider, as well as residences of plant executives and families of the owners.

The investigative proceedings were part of the earlier fraud case against executives of GPZ 10 on counts of large embezzlement in a state defense order. The damage was estimated at 811 million rubles on the first count.

An employee of an energy company's security department was detained in September 2024 for trying to bribe an FSB officer in exchange for stopping an inspection at GPZ 10.
