Putin-Trump phone call to remind Western politicians about importance of dialogue, diplomacy - Lavrov

MOSCOW. Feb 13 (Interfax) - Russia was stunned by the reaction of Western politicians to the phone call of Russian President Vladimir Putin with his U.S. counterpart Donald Trump, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said.

"What struck me as odd was that the whole world had fallen into a kind of stupor, and the call and the call reports were taken as something out of the ordinary," Lavrov said at a press conference on Thursday.

The U.S. President Joe Biden administration and European politicians believe that the rejection of dialogue and diplomacy and the shift to the language of threats, sanctions and military assistance were a natural thing to do, Lavrov said. "This is maybe why many in the West, starting with the EU leaders, fell into stupor when two civilized, polite people, who do not put their differences aside, had a normal, elementary conversation," he said.

There are a lot of differences between Russia and the United States, but both presidents "are perfectly aware that politics means the need to sit down and talk, find points of contact," Lavrov said.

"It's a pity that the reaction of the West shows it has practically run out of such people," he said, adding he hoped that the Putin-Trump call would "sober up" Western politicians.
