MOSCOW. Feb 26 (Interfax) - Nearly half of Russians, 49%, are in favor of lifting the moratorium on the death penalty, as seen from the findings of a poll conducted by Russia's VCIOM public opinion survey center, which it published on its official website on Wednesday.
The poll found that the share of those in favor of reinstating the death penalty in Russia is higher among older respondents. In particular, while this idea appeals to only 19% of respondents under 24 years old, this share reaches 33% among those aged from 25 to 33, 48% among those who are from 34 to 43 years old, 52% among those whose age ranges from 44 to 57, and 62% from 58 to 77.
As many as 15% of all respondents are in favor of completely abolishing the death penalty in Russia, and this share reaches 39% among those under 24, VCIOM found.
More than a quarter of respondents, 26%, believe the moratorium on the death penalty should remain in place in Russia, and another 10% were undecided.
VCIOM polled 1,600 respondents 18 years of age and older on February 16, 2025.
