Imprisonment for up to 7 years proposed for aiding int'l organizations in which Russia does not participle - State Duma speaker

MOSCOW. March 13 (Interfax) - Three bills have been drafted to improve control over the activity of foreign agents, State Duma speaker Vyacheslav Volodin said.

"It is proposed that aiding international organizations, in which Russia does not participate, as employee or for money reward entail criminal liability and be penalized with up to seven years in prison and confiscation of property," Volodin said on Telegram on Thursday.

A bill penalizes discrediting of the Russian Armed Forces and calls for sanctions against Russia with up to five years in a penitentiary and confiscation of property, he said.

"It is proposed that persons who assist in the fulfillment of resolutions of international organizations in which our country takes no part, for example the International Criminal Court, contribute to the activity of foreign authorities against Russia's security, and engage citizens, including minors, in gathering military-technical information that could be used to the detriment of our country be designated as foreign agents," Volodin said.

It is planned to try foreign agents and those who fled Russia for their illegal actions taken against Russia from abroad without the defendants' participation in court hearings, Volodin said. This concerns such crimes as public calls for terrorism, extremism, violation of Russia's territorial integrity, mass unrest and unleashing of an aggressive war, as well as dissemination of fake information about the Russian Armed Forces and their discreditation, destruction or damage of military graves and monuments, and rehabilitation of Nazism, he said.

"The adoption of these bills will allow protecting our country and its citizens from interference by unfriendly states and to put an end to crimes aimed to undermine fundamentals of the constitutional system, defense capabilities and security of Russia," Volodin said.

"Those who betrayed our country should have no chance to avoid justice and responsibility even if they are staying abroad," he said.
