Resolution of border problems between Bishkek, Dushanbe to enhance security in CSTO zone - organization (Part 2)

MOSCOW. March 13 (Interfax) - The signing of the border treaty between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan will enhance security in the zone of responsibility of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), the CSTO Secretariat said on Thursday.

"Indeed, the resolution of border problems will contribute to the progressive development of regional cooperation in various areas, higher security in the CSTO zone of responsibility, and the accomplishment of organization tasks," it said.

"Owing to consistent efforts and the political will of both heads of state, the border line has been delimited on almost 1,000 kilometers," the secretariat said.

In turn, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) welcomed the signing of the treaty. It said that the document "embodies the good will of the sides to resolve problems peacefully at consultations between equals and mutual understanding and respect."

"The SCO member states note the special significance of the signed treaty and view it as a valuable contribution to the cause of peace and the provision of security and stability in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization area," the SCO said in a statement.

Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov and his Tajik counterpart Emomali Rahmon signed the border treaty earlier on Thursday. In addition, 12 documents, among them an agreement between the foreign ministry on construction and use of motorways, were signed on the sidelines of Rahmon's visit to Kyrgyzstan.

The CSTO comprises Russia, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan.
