MOSCOW. March 31 (Interfax) - The Varyag missile cruiser, flagship of the Russian Pacific Fleet, has held an artillery drill in the Sea of Japan, the fleet press service said.
"At the initial stage, the missile cruiser fired a 130mm AK-130 artillery gun at coastal targets on the Zheltukhin Island. It fired both at visible targets on the coastline and targets hidden by the terrain," it said.
Electronic countermeasures were taken afterwards to avoid the mock enemy's counterstrike, it said. Countermine practice followed. The ship fired 30mm AK-630 automatic six-barrel guns to destroy a mockup of a floating mine, which endangered navigation.
"The Varyag missile cruiser held a damage control drill at sea. The crew formed an emergency response team, which put on fire suits, pressurized a 'burning' compartment, and put out the fire," the press service said.
