U.S. citizen detained for illegally crossing Belarusian border - State Border Committee

MINSK. April 1 (Interfax) - Belarusian customs officers have detained a U.S. citizen, the Belarusian State Border Committee said in a statement on Tuesday.

"Belarusian customs officers detained a U.S. citizen in the small hours of March 31 during border control at the Molodechno railway station," it said.

The border guards initiated an administrative proceeding on counts of illegal crossing of the Belarusian border, it said.

A preliminary investigation found that the U.S. citizen tried to enter Belarus twice on March 24, first through the Kamenny Log (Medininkai) checkpoint in the morning and then through the Benyakoni (Salcininkai) checkpoint in the evening, the statement said. He was unable to prove the sufficiency of funds for his stay and departure from Belarus and was denied entry, it said.

"After facing administrative liability, the trespasser will be deported to the Republic of Lithuania," the committee said.
