Putin urges Islamic states to fight terrorism, extremism together

KAZAN. May 16 (Interfax) - Russian President Vladimir Putin has urged Islamic states to eliminate such common threats to security as terrorism, extremism, and local conflicts by joint efforts.

"Nowadays, we can ensure sustainable harmonious development of the entire international community and effectively counter such security threats as terrorism, extremism, and the escalation of local conflicts only if we act together," Putin said in his greetings to participants in the international economic forum Russia-Islamic World in Kazan. Russian Deputy Prime Minister Marat Khusnullin read out the greetings.

For centuries, Russia "has been open to broad interaction with states of the Islamic world. Today, it continues successful and consistent expansion of economic, scientific, educational, humanitarian and interregional contacts despite the complex international situation," he said.
