Trump says not going to tighten anti-Russian sanctions as there's chance for progress in Ukraine issue

WASHINGTON. May 20 (Interfax) - U.S. President Donald Trump said after the phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin that he would not be tightening sanctions on Russia in order not to hinder the Ukraine settlement process.

"Well, because I think there is a chance of getting something done and if you do that you can also make it much worse," Trump told journalists in the White House.

"But it could be a time when it's going to happen," he said.

Trump replied in the affirmative when asked whether he believes that Putin wants peace and whether he trusts the Russian president.

Russian presidential aide Yury Ushakov told journalists that the prospect of new anti-Russian sanctions was discussed during the Putin-Trump phone call.
