Russia-U.S. dialogue needed but so are int'l obligations that can be trusted the future of bilateral relations - Medvedev

ST. PETERSBURG. May 20 (Interfax) - Moscow will only be able to trust the United States if appropriate guarantees are in place, the Russian Security Council's deputy chairman Dmitry Medvedev said.

"No one, in this case, can be trusted, despite the good relations. A dialogue is absolutely necessary. It is good that [Russia] now has it ongoing with the U.S. side. But one must trust those guarantees, those international documents which must be prepared. That is precisely the point of international law," Medvedev told journalists on Tuesday.

"If verifiable, assured international obligations are created, they are the only ones that can be trusted the future of our relations. If this sort of documentation proves impossible to prepare, it means events would be unfolding according to a far more complicated and difficult scenario," Medvedev said.

"That is all that can be said on the topic of trust in the international sphere. Guarantees, guarantees and again guarantees. Verification and control is what shapes the future of international relations," he said
