Russian Pacific Fleet starts exercise with up to 40 ships, 5,000 troops

MOSCOW. June 16 (Interfax) - Up to 40 ships and vessels of the Russian Pacific Fleet and over 30 planes and helicopters will take part in an exercise in the Pacific Ocean, the Sea of Japan, and the Sea of Okhotsk on June 16-30, the fleet press service said in a statement on Monday.

"In all, the exercise will involve up to 40 ships, boats and supply vessels, more than 30 planes and helicopters of the Pacific Fleet's marine aviation, over 5,000 troops and civilian specialists, and Bastion coastal missile systems," the press service said.

The scheduled exercise will be held in the Pacific Ocean, the Sea of Japan, and the Sea of Okhotsk on June 16-30 under the supervision of Pacific Fleet Commander Viktor Liina, it said.

"Pacific Fleet forces are deploying from bases to designated areas for the exercise," the press service said.

The forces will practice tracking down and following submarines of a mock enemy and providing anti-ship and air defense of ships at sea. Additionally, they will carry out combined missile strikes on solo and group marine targets, it said.

"Organization of all types of support for Pacific Fleet forces operating at long distances from bases will be trained, as well," the press service said.
