MOSCOW. June 16 (Interfax) - The Kaluga diesel-electric submarine has arrived at the Kola All-Arms Flotilla's base from a long-distance voyage, the Northern Fleet's press service said on Monday.
"The submarine under command of Capt. 2nd rank Vitaly Popov has successfully completed all assignments of the long-range voyage. The submarine captain reported that the submarine is serviceable and the crew is in good health and ready for new deployments after replenishing supplies and taking a brief rest," the press service said in a statement.
Chief of the Northern Fleet Staff Eduard Mikhailov, commanding officers of the Kola All-Arms Flotilla, and crew families welcomed the submarine back, the statement said.
Mikhailov accepted the captain's report and congratulated the submariners on returning to base, it said. "At the challenging time, the fleet continues to provide strategic deterrence and to take part in the special military operation," he said.
"Diesel-electric submarines have a big potential and are able to accomplish special missions in long and shorter-range sea zones," the press service quoted Mikhailov as saying.
According to official information, the Kaluga diesel-electric submarine of Project 899 was built on the blueprints of the Rubin Central Design Bureau for Marine Engineering and commissioned by the Navy in 1989. It has a full displacement of over 3,000 tonnes and carries six 533mm torpedo tubes.
