Russia's proposal to take surplus nuclear material from Iran remains valid, yet situation has exacerbated - Peskov

MOSCOW. June 16 (Interfax) - Moscow's proposal to take surplus nuclear material from Iran remains on the table, however, the hostilities have seriously exacerbated the situation in the Middle East, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.

Reporters asked Peskov on Monday what Russia could offer the Iranian-Israeli conflict sides in order to achieve a settlement, including storage of surplus nuclear material from Iran on its territory. "This proposal remains on the table, it is still valid," Peskov replied.

"Still, of course, the situation has seriously exacerbated since the start of hostilities. We know that the hostilities began on the eve of the planned round of indirect negotiations between Iran and the United States mediated by Oman," he said.

Moscow "stays ready to do everything necessary for [bringing the situation back on the peaceful track]," he said. "Of course, we can say in this connection yet again that root causes of the crisis have to be eliminated," Peskov said.

"The situation has escalated very seriously and, indeed, that has definitely not changed the state of affairs for the best," he said.
