PYONGYANG. June 17 (Interfax) - Russian Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu has arrived in Pyongyang at the direction of President Vladimir Putin to hold a meeting with President of the State Affairs Commission of North Korea Kim Jong Un, the press service of the Russian Security Council said in a statement.
"Sergei Shoigu has arrived in Pyongyang on special orders from President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin to hold talks with the leadership of the [Democratic People's Republic of Korea] DPRK pursuant to the agreements reached during the previous visit on June 4. These agreements are being implemented as part of the Russia-DPRK Treaty on Comprehensive Strategic Partnership," the statement said.
At their meeting earlier this month, Shoigu and Kim discussed bilateral relations, the situation around Ukraine, and certain points of the Treaty on Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
Speaking at a meeting with North Korean State Security Minister Ri Chang Dae in Moscow on May 28, Shoigu said that the actions by North Korean servicemen who fought together with Russian forces to liberate the Kursk region from Ukrainian troops are heroism.
The Treaty on Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between Russia and North Korea was signed in Pyongyang on June 19, 2024. The two countries ratified it in November.
