RUSSIAN RESCUERS BEGIN RELIEF WORKS ON TAIWAN

THAICHUNG, Taiwan, September 22 (AVN) -- Rescue teams of the Russian Emergency Ministry on Wednesday afternoon began relief works in Taiwan.

The Russian rescuers are working in the city of Thaichung 140 kilometres south of Taipei and its suburbs which were most severely devastated by Tuesday's quake, the worst in Taiwan in the past hundred years.

"Our accomodation is is much less important than immediate aid to people affected by the earthquake," Colonel Pavel Plata, head of the Emergency Ministry's operative group told the Military News Agency.

Japanese rescue teams were the first to arrive in Taiwan. Rescuers from Singapore, South Korea, the United States, Israel and Turkey are expected to arrive here in the next few hours.
