INDIAN SUBMARINE RETURNS HOME AFTER REPAIRS IN RUSSIA

MOSCOW, September 24 (AVN) -- The Sinduvir submarine of the Indian Navy has returned to its home port after repairs in the northern Russian city of Severodvinsk, a navy attache of the Indian Embassy to Russia told the Military News Agency on Friday.

The submarine had to go all the way across Europe and through the Indian ocean to reach home, the attache said. It was placed on military duty shortly after arrival, he added.

This submarine, designed by the Rubin central design bureau of navy vessels, belongs to the class of Warshavianka, known in the West as Kilo. It was built by the Admiralteiskie Verfi state-owned ship-manufacturing plant in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg) in 1998. The Indian Navy has several submarines of this class.

The sumbarine underwent repairs at the Zvyozdochka engineering plant in Severodvinsk, the plant's general director, Nikolai Kalistratov, told the Agency. Russian ship-manufactures repaired its frame, several units, special systems and other equipment, Kalistratov added.
