PRIMAKOV'S NUCLEAR DEAL TO BE INVESTIGATED UNDER STANDING ORDER -- SVR

MOSCOW, September 27 (AVN) -- Russia's Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) will follow the standing order in responding to State Duma deputy Alexander Vengerovsky's inquiry concering the so-called "nuclear deal" of former prime minister Vladimir Primakov, SVR spokesman Boris Labusov said on Monday.

Vengerovsky, who chairs the State Duma subcommittee for foreign intelligence, appealed to Prime Minister Vladimir Putin and SVR Director Vyacheslav Trubnikov, calling on them to pay attention to Western media reports, claiming that Primakov, while being Russia's foreign minister, sold nuclear technologies to Iraq for 800,000 U.S. dollars.

Vengerovsky does not seem to remember previous speculations on this matter, Labusov told the Military News Agency. The foreign minister has nothing to do with nuclear technologies, he said. And if the deal took place when Primakov headed the Foreign Intelligence Service, he only could have sold English or U.S. nuclear secrets, he said. That is why the SVR sees no reason to take any urgent measures on Vengerovsky's inquiry, Labusov added.
