MOSCOW, October 25 (AVN) -- Russian naval ports keep more than 370 written-off ships with a total displacement of 230,000 tons, a source in the Navy Staff said on Monday.
This number does not include nuclear submarines waiting to be salvaged, he told the Military News Agency. Many of these ships are scruppered or stay afloat in ship junkyards which have effectively turned into
scrap metal dumps, the source said, adding that they pose a serious threat for environment security. More than 50 environment violations were committed in the Russian navy this year, and most of them resulted from unproper keeping of written-off ships.
