FEDERALS IN CHECHNYA TO FACE MANPOWER PROBLEM

MOSCOW, November 2 (AVN) - about 40 percent of the solders and officers that take part in the anti-terrorist campaign in Chechnya are to be mustered out of service to reserve this autumn, Military Prosecutor's Office states. Less than two percent of them want to stay in the army on a contract bases.

Prosecutor's office predicts big problems with manpower in the unified federal troops. If all of those who were sent to Chechnya against the law (30 percent of federal solders and sergeants were called to military service in May-June of 1999) are allowed to leave the position, it may cause a catastrophic problem. Many officers of the North Caucasus military district do not want to continue their service and it may also influence the situation with the manpower.

During 10 months of 1999 about 1300 officers from the North Caucasus military district mustered out of service, only 15 percent of them for age reason.
